Two Sewing Machines To The Juvenile Detention Center in Mission

Today we presented two new Bernina Bernette sewing machines and four beading looms to the Juvenile Detention Center in Mission, SD at the 2006 giveaway celebration following the Hollow Horn Bear Sun Dance in St. Francis, SD. The machines were received by JDC director Pat Bad Hand who took them to the JDC later. Thank you to all who donated financially to this memorial project in the name of Lale Metzinger.

Michael Antoinette Gameaux receives Gene Marshall scholarship

We are pleased to announce that the Coleman Gene Marshall scholarship was awarded today to Michael Antoinette Gameaux on July 30th 2006. Michael is completing her undergraduate studies in sociology at Sinte Gleska University. She plans to do post-graduate studies in criminology. Michael used her $250 scholarship award to purchase a set of new tires for her car so she can drive to and from school safely to complete her college degree. Transportation is a critical issue for students on the reservation, many of them are often unable to make what can be a 50 mile round trip to school. There is no public transportation on the reservation and cost of gas and car maintenance are a major expense for students (as well as working people in general).
